More Than Just A Half-Way House
Drug addict, alcoholic, half-way house are all words that frequently have a negative connotation. The stigma and discrimination that is carried by the addicted often follows them for a lifetime.
Thankfully there is a new movement afloat in our society to change that and the Beacon House is on the leading edge of the change.
All too often, the halfway house has become a place to hang out until the alcoholic or addict improves his financial circumstances, puts out the family fires, and calms down his legal problems. Once he leaves he is likely to repeat the same destructive behaviors as before which are often a recipe for continued disaster unless he makes some important changes in his way of thinking and acting.
The Beacon House offers a structured living environment for recovering alcoholics and addicts who are trying to learn how to live in society as sober and productive individuals. We like to call it a “Recovery House.”
This more accurately describes the Beacon House which is more about teaching a way of living in recovery than it is about providing a place to live.
We not only provide a safe place to live we also work with men to teach them about their disease by using classes and community meetings. When an alcoholic or addict stops using he has only begun the process of recovery. He must learn a new way of thinking and a new way of acting without using drugs or alcohol to mask his feelings and alter his decisions.

The Beacon House offers a safe, clean, and controlled living environment for men working on their recovery. By working a 12 step recovery program designed around the concepts learned in 12 Step Programs, the alcoholic or addict can recover his life resulting in a spiritual awakening and a new way of life. All men participate together in the recovery process and take ownership in each other’s well being.
Residents attend recovery related meetings, events and activities every day. We encourage sober living every day. With time, as the clients develop new friendships, sober friendships, the dysfunctional relationships of their drinking and drug using days lose importance and life becomes livable once again.

Association of Halfway House Alcoholism Programs of North America
The Beacon House has joined with a large group of organizations across the country to continue our efforts to provide quality care to our residents.
Out of the grassroots movement that began with the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935, the Association of Halfway House Alcoholism Programs of North America, Inc. (AHHAP) was formally organized in 1966.
Today, AHHAP represents over 1500 residential facilities providing long-term, cost effective recovery services to over 120,000 individuals per year. AHHAP members have successfully affected millions of lives for over 40 years, returning individuals to sober productive living within their families and communities.
Through our halfway house/recovery homes, residents are provided opportunities to achieve quality sobriety via professional expertise, practicality, adherence to the principles and philosophies of the Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous and residence in a clean, calm and responsible home atmosphere.
The recovery facility is a realistic situational pathway to the type of life to which the recovering person will be exposed during his or her life. The halfway house/recovery home provides the continuing support to serve the resident efficiently and cost-effectively with positive impact on community health and economics. The very nature of the recovery facility provides the needed contact of "people helping people."
AHHAP is the international voice for residential services and programs that promote recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction.
AHHAP will accomplish this goal by:
• Promoting the development and quality operation of twelve-step community based residential services (e.g. halfway houses, sober living residences, extended care programs, recovery houses and transitional living facilities).
• Providing education and training.
• Exchanging knowledge and experience.
• Defining and promoting ethical standards for our field.
• Serving as the public policy representative on behalf of our membership.
The Beacon House is committed to providing our clients with the best of services and looks forward to working with AHHAP throughout the coming years. |
